A Place Where: Everyone Thrives
About Teresa
Teresa Fox-Bettis is a lifelong resident of Prichard and a dedicated community leader who has spent over three decades advocating for fair housing, economic development, and social justice. Raised in Prichard and educated at Edward A Palmer Elementary, St. James Major Catholic School, and McGill Toolen, Teresa's roots run deep in the community she seeks to serve on City Council.
As Executive Director of the Center for Fair Housing since 2000, Teresa has secured over $10 million in grants and settlements, helping more than 600 families retain stable housing worth $576,000 in rent value. Under her leadership, the Center became a HUD-approved housing counseling agency and has recovered $45,000 in conciliations from housing providers who violate tenant rights.
Teresa's commitment to Prichard extends far beyond her professional work. She currently serves as President of three vital organizations: Groundworks Mobile County (environmental and youth empowerment), Stand Up Mobile (Black voter engagement), and the Africatown Redevelopment Corporation (historic preservation and economic development). As Vice President of Port of Africatown, she works to expand business opportunities and foster economic growth in the Africatown/Prichard region.
Her extensive board service includes the Mobile Environmental Justice Action Coalition, NAACP Mobile County, Building Alabama Reinvestment, and North Mobile County Farmers Market, where she connects youth with environmental education and brings fresh produce to Prichard residents.
Teresa's leadership has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2021 Humanitarian Award from People United to Advance the Dream, selection as a 2022 Focus Empowers 40/40 Honoree, and participation in Harvard Kennedy School's 2023 Power, Innovation, and Leadership Cohort for transformative African American women leaders.
A devoted wife to Dennis and mother to four children—David, Johnathan, Austin, and Hannah—Teresa understands the challenges facing Prichard families. Her three decades of advocacy, combined with her deep community connections and proven track record of results, position her to bring effective leadership to District 4 on the Prichard City Council.
